Mac Attack

Monday, October 24th, 2005

I still have some setup to do, but I’ve been using a Mac mini pretty much alll day and I like it so far. Things just work. I may update later with more details, since this is mostly a test of Flock. So far so good.

An experiment

Saturday, October 8th, 2005

On Thursday I attempted to see if I can do my work using a Mac as my desktop. Most of the time, when I use the iBook (Komodo for those who care), it’s at a location other than my desk – usually because my main computer (GilaMonster) isn’t usable for some reason or another, mostly because my connection to the outside world is down.

What I did was connect the Mini-VGA adapter to my KVM switch (it’s still there actually) and plug my keyboard into the side of the iBook. Unfortunately, it’s an old PS/2 switch. I may buy a new one if it becomes necessary, but I’ve been managing fine with the old one. I use an Apple keyboard, so there was no problem with the keyboard mapping. My biggest gripe was the display size, but I suppose I can’t expect too much from a 12″ iBook. I checked the display capabilities of the Mac mini and they are much greater.

If I can manage it, I might do the experiment over a couple of days next time. On a side note, I can’t use Bonjour (formerly Rendezvous or Zeroconf) without thinking of this.

Slight delay

Tuesday, October 4th, 2005

The setup of this site has been delayed a little for a couple of reasons.

On Thursday, the head cold that had been hanging around the house took hold and made me pretty useless for a couple of days.

Saturday was spent away from computers, doing some work around the house. I disconnected the stove and moved it out of the way so I could tile underneath it. It hadn’t been moved the last couple of times the kitchen was painted and, as a result, was hiding a big off-white area. I managed to find the orangey-red paint in the garage and gave it a coat. It looks a little patchy, but it’s a lot better than it was. I have 5 tiles to cut and set before I can grout and move the stove back. This is in addition to the tiles I have to cut for the edges in the kitchen and entry way.

On Sunday, I had access to Komodo, so I spent part of the day playing The Sims 2 (more accurately, this version).

Today brought an interesting series of problems. Firstly, my keyboard and mouse got disconnected. Some time later, my computer somhow forgot how to access the SATA channel playing host to the drive with /home and /music. I coudl live without /music, but /home was a little more urgent, since I have a few things that log to there. Of course, there’s always that whole work thing that I do on weekdays too. I’ll try and get my site images sorted – especially the link back to Laughing Squid
