Has Fresno always been in the geek news?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been reading my current crop of sites (Engadget, Gizmodo, BoingBoing, TUAW, Laughing Squid etc.) and I’ve noticed Fresno being mentioned more. Maybe I’m just noticing it more now that I work down here. First off was the mention of the Solar Farm at the airport and now it’s this guy trying to bet on a game of cards in a casino with weed:

Trying out the WordPress app for iPhone

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

I downloaded the WordPress app for iPhone just to try it out. There’s a possibility that it will make me more likely to update as I have my iPhone in my pocket pretty much all the time anyway. So far I’m liking it.

On the iPhone front, I have ordered myself an 8GB iPhone 3G from AT&T (I didn’t want to deal with Arden Fair or the Apple store at this time and the sales guy was very nice), so I’m currently playing the waiting game as my new phone does its best Godot impression. I also picked up a new SIM with a 559 area code and the very basic Nokia 2610 to use as a support cell phone in place of the awful Lucky Goldstar flippy dealie on Virgin Mobile that I had before.

Now it’s time for some dinner before the drive to Fresno for work.

How about that iPhone 2.0 upgrade?

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I took the plunge and installed the iPhone 2.0 update yesterday today (I certainly didn’t go and download an unreleased copy of the updater package, nosiree). I’ll still go for the iPhone 3G in about a week, but for now the software’s pretty awesome. I am definitely digging the push email etc. and the app store. I’m patiently waiting for Top 3 Solitaire, which I certainly wouldn’t have played (or gotten completely addicted to) on any kind of a jailbroken/unshackled iPhone in the past.

The upgrade went well, apart from one thing – because I performed the upgrade from a computer that I had never registered the iPhone with before, I lost all my data. It’s no huge loss as I can just sync. it all up tonight when I get home. Speaking of which, it’s time to hit the road.

We’re losing another.

ExpressJet Airlines announced today that they’re ceasing branded operations on September 2nd. This reduces the airline count at both SMF and FAT once more. Having dealt with this airline on a professional level in both locations, I will be sad to see them go. I was planning on flying with them to San Diego in either August or October, but I guess that decision has been made for me. They’ll still be flying as Continental Express, but only in and out of Continental hubs. The wording seems to suggest that we may see a branded operation returning some day. Let’s hope so.

She’s blaming the airline? Honestly?

There’s a lady out there blaming JetBlue for her own inability to get on the correct flight. She was supposed to be flying from OAK-LGB (on B6 245 from what I can gather) but managed to get on B6 96 to JFK instead, which leaves 40 minutes later. I guess it’s possible that her flight was delayed, meaning that both flights were boarding at the same time. One was leaving out of gate 9, the other out of 9A – they’re apparently well marked. Having worked at airports for over two years, I know for a fact that people don’t listen to the announcements or read signs, so I can see how she managed to end up on the wrong plane. What I can’t quite get is that, despite being put on the next available flight to her destination, she still wants more compensation. It seems to me that JetBlue already did more than enough for her.
