Incrementing the country counter
Wednesday, January 7th, 2009Back in October, I added another country to the list of places I’ve been. Since we were in San Diego, it was decided that we take a quick jaunt across the border into Mexico. The most common way to do this is to go down to Tijuana, but we decided againt that and headed east toward Tecate. I had heard that it was cleaner and less scary. The drive was a little scary, mostly because of my mother freaking out in the back seat as I headed up the hilly road. We got to Tecate (the town in California on the US side of the border) and parked the rental car in a paid lot before heading toward the border.
Walking across the border was pretty much a non-event. We headed over to the Tecate brewery, which is the main business in the city. Unfortunately, there was a large meeting going on at the time and the brewery tour was not being run. On the up side, the beer garden was open, so we got to sample their wares. There wasn’t a whole lot more to do on a Monday in October, so we headed back toward San Diego, with a stop planned in Santee to surprise my dad with a trip to Hungry Howie’s Pizza – a place we discovered on our trip to Florida many years ago and had not eaten at since. Because of the timing, we arrived about two hours too early for them to open up. The decision was made not to wait around for them to open up and get something to eat back in San Diego instead.
